Deborah Zonunpuii

Secretary,

Hill Fest Organizing Committee

The Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram (HATIM), organized a youth festival called Hill Fest on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of March 2024 at the HATIM Campus in Kawmzawl, Lunglei. This marked the third edition of Hill Fest organized by the college. The event provided youths with a diverse range of activities and experiences, allowing them to participate and gain valuable life lessons.

INTRODUCTION

Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram, initiated the first-ever Hill Fest - A Youth Festival in Lunglei in 2019, marking a new era of celebration and creativity within the college community. However, the event encountered an unforeseen interruption due to a global pandemic, causing its annual tradition to pause until 2022. This year, the festival reemerged, prepared to engage and inspire in its eagerly awaited third edition.

The main objective of the festival is to provide a platform for positive engagement for students and youths, fostering creativity and nurturing ideas. Open to the public, the festival extends invitations to colleges, schools, businesses, and private firms from both within and outside Mizoram to set up stalls showcasing their products, talents, and creativity. The overarching vision is to provide a platform for constructive engagement, thereby mitigating the concerning rise in societal issues among disgruntled and frustrated youths, such as alcohol, drug, and substance abuse, which often perpetuate cycles of poverty.

Hill Fest aims to create an environment where youths, particularly college students, have access to a diverse range of events and activities, allowing them to experience various facets of life and learn valuable lessons. Beyond mere entertainment, college festivals serve as platforms for enriching students' learning experiences. While academic studies are undoubtedly crucial, involvement in cultural and extracurricular activities is equally essential for personal development. These activities provide opportunities to develop leadership skills, organizational abilities, teamwork, and the exploration and showcasing of hidden talents and potentials among students.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE FESTIVAL

The development objectives for promoting a Youth Festival for the Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram, are as follows:

1.      To create an     annual youth festival that is intimate fun, thought-provoking and sometimes challenging.

2.      Build a common arena for the promotion and presentation of various talents and creativity – “Diversity in Unity‟.

3.      To provide a program of events which engages and inspires the interest of the students and youths in many forms; from poetry writing to music composition, from painting to photography, etc. to enhance and nurture their creativity. A positive engagement for a positive outcome.

4.      Set up an inclusive forum that brings together those with a common interest in speaking and the written word.

5.      To promote      and improve    various life skills through the opportunity to work together on various projects / events in the festival.

6.      To promote and enhance Personality Development through various programs included in the festival.

7.      To develop      a center for      skill and entrepreneurship       training and creating a platform for students and youths to showcase their organizational, business and creativity skills.

8.      To promote and appreciate arts and culture significance in the process of learning.
